The new generation of nursing graduates is older and more ethnically diverse. They're more likely than their colleagues over the age of 50 to have a college or university education. They also expect to change jobs more frequently.
These are the findings of a Registered Nurse Population report published in September 2010 by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. The report comes at a time when the need for nurses is expected to increase as baby boomers age and when RNs who are part of the baby boom generation are among those about to retire. The Tri-Council for Nursing has been encouraging nurses to recognize entry level nursing trends and advance their careers. There are fairly immediate needs for nurse educators and advanced practice specialty nurses, the Tri-Council suggested.
Those who are interested in becoming nurses will have a number of job types to choose from. Depending on the degree level, those who enter this field will be doing a great variety of different things, from caring for patients, to administering and managing large nursing staffs. It's up to the student to decide what kind of career she or he wants to create. Those who hold a certification as a licensed practical nurse accomplish the basic duties of nursing. They are directly involved in patient care and complete tasks such as drawing blood, taking temperatures, and monitoring blood pressure. Licensed practical nurses work under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors. LPN programs last about one year and are usually completed at a community college or vocational school. For students who achieve an associate degree in nursing will be licensed as a Registered Nurse. A registered nurse must pass a state examination in order to be licensed. RN's also work directly with patients, but have more training and responsibility than an LPN. Doctors and RNs work closely to plan and administer a patient's course of care.
The average annual earnings for an RN across the board for 2008 was about $53,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that employment growth for these nurses between 2008 and 2018 is expected to be much faster than the average for all occupations and is to include some 581,500 newly created jobs and hundreds of thousands of replacement jobs. The fastest rate of growth is to be in physician's offices followed by home healthcare services and then nursing care facilities, according to the Bureau of Labor. Registered nurses with bachelors degrees are to have better employment prospects, and those with advanced practice specialties, such as clinical nurse specialists, nurse mid-wives, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthesiologists are to be in high demand particularly in inner cities and rural areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes. The registered nurse schools
offer accelerated and combined degree programs whereby registered nurses with hospital diplomas or associate degrees can move more immediately on to a masters degree.
Nurses also have the option to work in a variety of environments. They can choose to work in a hospital, a doctor's office, or even a clinic if that is the area they are interested in. Nursing jobs often come with a range of benefits; from health insurance to child care options. Choosing a career in nursing can lead to a lifetime of career satisfaction. Not only will you be entering a healthy career field with growth, you will enjoy a good salary, too. The generous salary will definitely offset the cost of your education after only a few years of work. The benefits of helping others can't be quantified, but you can be assured there is a great deal of satisfaction in it. The registered nurse schools will give you the education that you need to jump into the work force. While they will prepare you for the hands-on care you will give, the rest is up to you. Luckily, the nursing field continues to grow and expand with the overall expanded demand for health care services. The nursing field is expected to grow by over 20 percent in the next ten years. Nurse schools will prepare you to jump into this growing job market, giving you the tools that you need to quickly find a job in your career path.
